So often we ask the same ol’ questions in interviews – but what kinds of questions help peel back the layers of a person quickly? You only have a short time to make a judgement as to if this person will fit your team. You are looking to screen out entitled people, toxic people and those who don’t encompass your company’s values.
Here are some thoughts on different questions:
1) Tell me about a time you stepped up to do something outside of your job description that needed to be done.
This question shows if the candidate is willing to go beyond their job description for the greater good of the company. Hopefully they won’t overthink it!
2) When you are having a really challenging, frustrating day at work – how do you react?
Do they isolate? Go cry in the bathroom? Go quiet? Get angry? Walk out? Lash out at people? Go talk to their supervisor? Take a moment to recentre?
3) What are the top three leadership traits that you look for in a manager?
With this question you are attempting to gauge their expectations and the atmosphere they function at their best.
4) Have you ever failed at something and if so, why did you fail and what did you learn from the experience?
This question can lead to a conversation about resiliency, personal responsibility, and tendencies under pressure.
5) What would you do if you overheard your co-workers saying negative things about another co-worker?
How do they handle conflict? You want someone to reply that this is unacceptable behavior, and, ideally, let that employee know that they do not want to be involved in the gossip.
6) What is the one thing you would improve about yourself?
This question gives you an indication of their self- awareness – do they know what their weaknesses are? Do they know how they could better themselves?
7) Other than family members, who have been the greatest influences in your life and why?
I like this question because it can uncover what inspires them.
8) What brings you fulfillment at work?
This will show if they are action or results driven - are they competitive or do they just want to check boxes? Do they want and EXPECT quick growth? Do they understand that growth takes time?
